Featured Creative: Angela Canada Hopkins

Painter

The vibrant depiction of a human cell in the picture is No. 5 in a series of cell images created by artist Angela Canada Hopkins. After her father succumbed to cancer in June 2001, she decided the best way to overcome her new "enemy" was by embracing it through her art. Each painting begins with a photo of a cancer cell, which Canada Hopkins then deconstructs and reinterprets using triumphant colors and bold brush strokes. Each canvas telegraphs a message of hope to cancer sufferers, cancer survivors, and their loved ones. Canada Hopkins is a full-time artist and resides in Downtown Loveland, with her husband, James. www.canadahopkins.com

FEATURED EVENT: Love and Light Festival

The 1st Annual Love + Light: A Contemporary Art and Light exhibition was held at the Loveland Feed and Grain in February 2012. Over 1000 people attended this event, breaking the record for any event held at this location. Megan Tracy and Carrie Johansing wanted to create a show that showcased Love in a contemporary way, thus merging the art community of Loveland with their reputation as the sweetheart city for Valentines weekend.

Artists from all over the state participated and the artwork varied from installation to light graffiti and from large-scale paintings to snow sculpture. Even with freezing temperatures, guests stood in line for over half an hour to be able to get a glimpse at the innovative and high quality art. Harrington Arts Academy turned one of the loading docks into a stage and provided music and entertainment to the crowd. Fire Dancers lit the outside parking lot with daring and creative dances. Inside the photo gallery work ranged from 3D translucent panels with images of female figures to photo collage and light painting. Guests enjoyed singer/songwriters playing acoustic guitar in the 112 year old building.
